“[The Scorpion in the Story] is a flawless work... It's hard to find comparisons... Magnificent!" -- Le Cri du Coyote (France)
Tori Sparks’ third album, The Scorpion in the Story, is a tale in thirteen chapters: A tour diary in the form of a concept album. The album is Tori’s second collaboration with co-producer David Henry (R.E.M., Ben Folds, Josh Rouse, Widespread Panic, Cowboy Junkies), and features an all-star cast of musicians, including bassist Viktor Krauss, and multi-instrumentalists Will Kimbrough and Fats Kaplin. Each song was written about one of the many colorful characters Tori on the road met while touring nonstop in 2008, and inside the album art is a map charting the physical journey and the origin of each song. Called “a knockout” by The Village Voice, Tori's dynamic delivery is brimming with emotion. Gut-wrenching lyrics with an ironic twist reflect her sense of humor in the face of life’s and the road’s many trials. Songs from the album have been licensed for television by networks including Lifetime, The Oxygen Network, The Travel Channel, Lufthansa Airlines, and for use by non-profit organizations Life Beyond Breast Cancer and Paste magazine's Songs for Haiti initiative, among others. The Scorpion in the Story also includes a bonus track, a French version of the song “Merry Go-Round” (“Le Manège”).
"Refreshing… [The Scorpion in the Story] contains that secret ingredient of a hit song, the enjoyable heartbreak.” -The Next Big Thing (Germany)
"With the grit of Chrissie Hynde, the sadness of Martha Davis in the Motels, and the pure sensualness of Margo Timmins from the Cowboy Junkies, Tori Sparks is truly, one of the most original artists I have heard in a long, long time." -Music News Nashville (US) “Every track sounds like Tori Sparks, but none of the songs sounds like another one!” -Skope Magazine (US)
