BARCELONA IN THE ROUND V
ENGLISH (español abajo): Get ready for a very special live music experience. American singer-songwriter Tori Sparks brings Nashville to Barcelona, with her fifth "in the round" concert. This kind of show — typical of the Nashville songwriter scene, but completely new to Barcelona — features three individual singer-songwriters. They take the stage together and trade off performing their original songs in an acoustic format. Each turn is called a “round.”
Sometimes the performers are friends and collaborators, sometimes they’re strangers, meeting onstage for the first time. Spontaneous collaborations, audience participation, the story behind the song, premieres of brand-new compositions — in these concerts, anything can happen and there are always surprises. It’s the most stripped-down, exposed, basic format for an artist to showcase his or her music — just one instrument and one voice — and is an opportunity to hear to your favorite artists share their music in an intimate setting while simultaneously discovering other talented musicians.
This in-the-round show is also special because it reunites three of the protagonists from the 2020 documentary, 37 Grados: urban, soul and Afropop diva Marga Mbande; versatile experimental electronica artist Inma Gomes; and Sparks herself, who has left an indelible footprint on the music world with her unique blend of rock, blues, and flamenco fusion.
In order to respect social distancing and COVID prevention measures, this concert will be presented in a streaming format with a limited live audience. The event will be broadcast live on the online platform Beyoursound, a new initiative that was born of the desire to encourage live music and provide support to local artists. TORI SPARKS
Rock/Blues/Flamenco Fusion
Singer Tori Sparks was born in Chicago, the home of the Blues, and later went on to live and record in Country music capital Nashville. Since the age of 18, she has played an average of 150-200 concerts per year in 24 countries and has released 8 albums. Alone or with a band, Tori is a force of nature on stage.
Her last three albums El Mar (2014), La Huerta (2017) and the live double album Wait No More (2019), have turned her into an international success, largely in part due to the distinctly fresh sound she and her Barcelona-based musical collaborators have crafted onstage and in the studio. Called "adventurous, always pushing the envelope" by Rolling Stone, "pure art" by Los Conciertos de Radio3, and named Rock Artist of the Year by No Solo Cine, Tori is also known for giving back to the community and spearheaded several solidarity projects during the coronavirus pandemic.

Afro-fusion/Soul/Urban
Marga Mbande, Equatoguinean by heritage and Spanish by birth, is a multidimensional artist whose music possesses the raw attitude and energy of urban music, the velvet smoothness of soul, and the catchy beats of Afropop. In recent years she has traveled the world with various musical projects, performing in Norway, Mexico, Armenia, and the United States.
On stage she is pure elegance, power, and sensitivity — above all, she knows how to connect with the audience. Her new album Afromantik, was produced by Shola (renowned producer and bassist for the Ceftones) and is set to be released in Spring 2021. It reflects our continued search for identity and belonging in the times we live in and is brimming with fresh beats influenced by the fusion of cultures and styles that is quintessentially “La Jefa,” Marga Mbande.

Electronica/Jazz/Pop
Inma Gomes is a singer, lyricist and composer whose expression and dynamic range will make you do a double-take. With a Higher Degree in Jazz Singing from the Liceo Conservatory of Barcelona under her belt, her sunny demeanor and her keyboard in tow, you might expect a traditional setlist of jazz standards. (Don’t.) Her one-of-a-kind voice and her highly personal style of music will open up places in your heart that you didn’t even know existed.
Gomes’ style is the definition of eclectic, incorporating jazz, soul, 80s electronica, pop, and trip hop — yet her sound is uniquely hers. Her first album, Blue Season (2011) was jazz-soul fusion recorded with her trio, but her EPs Follow the Love (2016) and Alisos (2019) were an immersion in electropop experimentation. Over the years she has collaborated with acclaimed musicians such as Jordi Bonell, Jon Robles, Isaac Coll and Ale Romero, and has composed for Spanish pop artists, the French band Melokolektiv, and more. She is currently at work on her next album, her second with producer Rubén García Zarranz, release date TBD.
ESPAÑOL: Prepárate para una experiencia de música en directo muy especial. La cantautora americana Tori Sparks lleva Nashville a Barcelona, con su quinto concierto en el formato "in the round.” Este tipo de concierto, típico de la escena musical de Nashville pero totalmente desconocido en Barcelona, es cuando tres cantautores — a veces amigos y colaboradores, a veces desconocidos — suben juntos al escenario y ofrecen temas propios en acústico. Cada turno se llama una “ronda,” o “round” en ingles.
Colaboraciones espontáneas, la participación del público, la historia detrás de la canción, estrenos de temas recién nacidos — en estos conciertos puede pasar cualquier cosa, y siempre hay bonitas sorpresas. Es una oportunidad única para escuchar a tus artistas favoritos compartir su música en un ambiente íntimo, y a la vez descubrir otros artistas talentosos. En este formato más básico, más expuesto, mas desnudo para un(a) artista, cada uno solo tiene su instrumento y su voz para contar sus historias.
Este espectáculo “in the round” también es especial porque reúne a tres de las protagonistas del documental de 2020, 37 Grados: la diva de música urbana, soul y Afropop Marga Mbande; la versátil artista de música electrónica experimental Inma Gomes; y la propia Sparks, que ha dejado una huella imborrable en el mundo de la música con su mezcla de rock, blues y flamenco fusión.
Con el fin de respetar el distanciamiento social y las medidas de prevención del COVID, este concierto se presentará en formato streaming con un público de aforo muy limitado. El evento se transmitirá en directo en la plataforma online Beyoursound, una nueva iniciativa que nació del deseo de fomentar la música en vivo y apoyar a los y las artistas locales. Marga Mbande, ecuatoguineana por herencia y española de nacimiento, es una artista multidimensional cuya música posee la actitud y la energía de la música urbana, la suavidad aterciopelada del soul y los ritmos pegadizos del Afropop. En los últimos años ha viajado por el mundo con diversos proyectos musicales, actuando en Noruega, México, Armenia y los Estados Unidos.
En el escenario es pura elegancia, poder y sensibilidad; sobre todo, sabe cómo conectar con el público. Su nuevo álbum Afromantik fue producido por Shola (reconocido productor y bajista de los Ceftones), y se lanzará en la primavera de 2021. El disco refleja nuestra búsqueda continua de identidad y inspiración en los tiempos en que vivimos y está lleno de ritmos frescos influenciados por la fusión de culturas y estilos que la esencia de “La Jefa,” Marga Mbande.

Inma Gomes es una cantante, letrista y compositora cuya expresión y rango dinámico te harán flipar. Con su Grado Superior de Canto Jazz por el Conservatorio Liceo de Barcelona, y su alegre sonrisa casi igual de grande que su teclado, uno podría cometer el error de esperar un setlist tradicional de estándares de jazz. (No lo hagas.) Su voz única y su estilo de música tan personal te abrirán lugares en tu corazón que ni siquiera sabías que existían.
El estilo de Gomes es la definición de ecléctico, incorporando jazz, soul, electrónica de los 80, pop y trip hop, pero su sonido es exclusivamente suyo.
